Custom T Shirt Printing Basics
Printers typically receive art which is designed in graphic progams such as Adobe Illustrator. The art a custom t shirt printer uses is color separated, meaning the custom t shirt printer is able to print out each color component of your design separately. Once the separate colors are output, the custom t shirt printer will 'burn screens' of each color component which will be used to print the t shirts. The custom t shirt is printed by laying a screen down on the shirt, putting ink on the screen and spreading the ink through the screen using a squeegee. The color is added at the time of printing so the colors in the art file don't have to be the colors actually used to print on the custom t shirt. Surprisingly, a big part of the cost of custom t shirts is in the handling of the shirts. Each time the shirt is moved to a different position in order to print another t shirt location, the costs increase significantly. This is why it's often cheaper to print 4 colors on the front of a custom printed t shirt, than it is to print 1 color on the front and 1 color on the back of a custom printed t shirt.
